• Be certain that your new addition has an abundance of electrical outlets and on a circuit of its own so you won't blow fuses. In addition to all the usual lamps, TV, etc., as you add medical equipment each item needs an outlet -- and most have batteries which require a recharger, which of course requires an outlet, too!
  • Extra closet space with adjustable shelving for storage of equipment and supplies would be ideal.
  • A way to adjust the room temperature independently of the rest of the house is great.
  • Don't skimp on bathroom size. A powerchair takes a lot of room to maneuver. Pocket doors wark really well. One great way to add space to a small bathroom is to use big double doors. That gives you bedroom space to use as part of the bathroom.
  • A roll under sink is basic, and when selecting a sink, find one with a narrow rim and have it installed as close to the front edge of the counter as possible. That will make hair washing and the 'rinse and spit' part of brushing your teeth much easier .
  • When planning the layout, remember that you may want to add a ceiling lift track at some of point so you may want to beef up the ceiling joists, and if possible, anticipate that the track will be considerably easier to install if the rooms are laid out so that the track can run perpendicular to the joists.
